RIP, Big John Gillis

Big John Gillis was laid to rest this past weekend. To the city of Indianapolis, he was a booming radio voice. Big John Gillis gave the helicopter radio reports every morning, guiding people safely into work. To me, he was a pet daddy. Our conversations were more about the animals we loved. And, for a big guy - he was a softy! It was always a pleasure to have him help out at the Humane Society's Paws and Remember Memorial Ceremony, sharing a letter that he wrote to Benny on the day that he died. A letter that, after a thousand readings, still makes me cry,... I just wanted to share it with you,....

April 21. What a bittersweet day,... as it has for the past nine years, my day started off with a bit of a heavy heart. I remember like it was yesterday the day that beautiful little doggie died. But this April 21st is a bit different - as this was the day that a new little doggie has joined Amy and Wesī family. The start of a new chapter for them with Berky now being a part of their young married life!
